Rays of the Sun : Kindness is something you feel

"Kindness is something you feel - a warmth and expansiveness which flows from our growing openness. Kindness is our contact, our strongest link with the nondual state."

Rays of the Sun : Whole-hearted intention

"When we open our perception, we do not feel constrained to anticipate events or people's possible reactions. We stop registering every being detected by our perceptual sonar in terms of our preconceptions. Perception then begins to expand beyond its set boundaries. Once perception has begun to open we're led naturally toward the liberation in our responses, which is known as whole-hearted intention."

Rays of the Sun : Karmic law is directly consequential

"The ‘Law of Karma’ is different from externally enforced societal law, because ‘karmic law’ is directly consequential and self-implementing. We perceive the world in a certain way, and react to it in accordance with that style of perception. That is what is meant by karma. There’s no injustice in this kind of ‘law’ apart from the injustice to the nondual state perpetrated by karmic patterning."

Rays of the Sun : Taking refuge in the three jewels

"Taking refuge in the three jewels-Buddha, dharma and sangha--means to rely on the as it is-ness of the Buddha-the realised exemplar of actuality; the dharma-the expression of actuality; and the sangha-those who aspire to experience actuality."

Rays of the Sun : Practice of kindness

"In everyday life we have the ideal opportunity to develop our practice of kindness, because we are constantly brought into contact with others."

Rays of the Sun : Open perception

"When we open our perception, we do not feel constrained to anticipate events or people’s possible reactions. Because our perception has opened, our responses naturally begin to flow from that free source, and motivation becomes less constricted by the need to establish ourselves as solid, permanent, separate, continuous and defined. We become able to relate to life as it actually is."

Rays of the Sun : Review by Rick Finney

Rick Finney has reviewed Rays of the Sun on Amazon.com

In this book Ngakpa Chogyam, an English lama of the Nyingma school now living in Wales, has given us an excellent explanation of the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. These are basic Buddhist teachings--the ground, in fact, of Buddhist practice--and it is always helpful to review them.

Here, the author takes a fresh approach, and his precise and careful use of language communicates a wealth of meaning. In some places, that meaning becomes fully clear only after a second reading. At other times, the author's choice of words makes immediate and surprising sense--for example, when he introduces the term "distracted-being" in place of the more conventional (to Western readers) and problematic word "ego."

The teachings here on the value of kindness are also very helpful and could usefully be taken to heart. The emphasis throughout is on direct engagement with the teachings, and on genuine experience.

Another lama, Chogyam Trungpa, in describing how mindfulness meditation can blossom into panoramic awareness, once said that "when one's feet finally touch the ground, the landscape opens up." That is the message of this very fine book, as well.

Rays of the Sun is published by Aro Books worldwide, ISBN 978-1-898185-06-2.  It is also available at all leading bookstores including Lulu, Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk. For more information please see the book's web page http://bit.ly/ncrros

Continually becoming a Buddhist

"Becoming a Buddhist is a process of continually becoming a Buddhist – of continually breaking through limitations and conditioned perception."

An act of kindness

"An act of kindness enables us to side-step our attachment to the past and future. It is a moment out; a day off; a holiday from me-centred concerns – and, as such, it can be lived vividly moment by moment."

Karmic law is directly consequential

"Awareness means relinquishing the police state of karmic-vision and assuming personal responsibility. Karma is the sum total of our perception in all its excruciating intricacy. The ‘Law of Karma’ is different from externally enforced societal law, because ‘karmic law’ is directly consequential and self-implementing. We perceive the world in a certain way, and react to it in accordance with that style of perception. That is what is meant by karma. There’s no injustice in this kind of ‘law’ apart from the injustice to the nondual state perpetrated by karmic patterning."

The problem lies in our way of seeing

"The first fundamental certainty is the experience of unsatisfactoriness. Dukkha—unsatisfactoriness—is not what we are and where we are – but how we are. It’s the subjective quality of our experience that is being described as unsatisfactory. The problem lies in our way of seeing rather than in the material fabric of the world."
